چکیده

Spatial join is the most expensive operation in geographic databases, but essentially important to compute spatial relationships intrinsic to geographic data. In account of spatial relationships real world entities may affect the behavior of other entities in the neighborhood. Spatial relationships are fundamental for knowledge discovery in geographic databases and are strongly related to the discovered patterns. Knowledge discovery is a user-dependent process, but the user is usually neither an expert in geographic databases nor in spatial relationships. This paper presents an approach to reduce the number of spatial relationships for knowledge discovery, using a geo-ontology and semantic spatial integrity constraints. We show how spatial constraints can help the user of knowledge discovery in both defining the semantically consistent spatial relationships and reducing the verification of unnecessary relationships.

Enhancing the Process of Knowledge Discovery in Geographic Databases Using Geo-Ontologies

This chapter introduces the problem of mining frequent geographic patterns and spatial association rules from geographic databases. In the geographic domain most discovered patterns are trivial, non-novel, and noninteresting, which simply represent natural geographic associations intrinsic to geographic data. A large amount of natural geographic associations are explicitly represented in geogra...

Towards Specialized Integrity Constraints for Spatial Datacubes

Spatial datacubes (also called "spatial multidimensional databases") are the cornerstone of the emerging Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing (SOLAP) technology. They are aimed at supporting Geographic Knowledge Discovery (GKD) as well as certain types of spatial decision-making. Although these technologies seem promising at first glance, they may provide unreliable results if one does not con...

Mining Geo-Referenced Databases: A Way to Improve Decision-Making

Knowledge discovery in databases is a process that aims at the discovery of associations within data sets. The analysis of geo-referenced data demands a particular approach in this process. This chapter presents a new approach to the process of knowledge discovery, in which qualitative geographic identifiers give the positional aspects of geographic data. Those identifiers are manipulated using...

A Framework for Combining Rules and Geo-ontologies

Geo-ontologies have a key role to play in the development of the geospatial-semantic web, with regard to facilitating the search for geographical information and resources. They normally hold large amounts of geographic information and undergo a continuous process of revision and update. Hence, means of ensuring their integrity are crucial and needed to allow them to serve their purpose. This p...
